I would love to talk about the "silent family secret" what I mean by that is simply this... I am not that mad militant black woman who is hating on any sister that is lighter then me. As Jael has commented on my status recently, our hues are amazing {paraphrased} (she is 100% correct).. I love the fact that we can range as a people from the 'color spectrum' of dark sweet chocolate to vanilla cream. Also, what makes us so beautiful as a people is the wide range of hair textures we have.. from the tightest of coils to the loosely coiled.... All of that being said.. I want to address black women ducking from the conversation of advertisement and the lack of darker skinned women with tightly coiled hair in the advisements. As I have stated I am well aware there are many shades, hues and textures, however lets call it the way it is.. for the most part especially in our own community dark skin, tightly coiled (women) not so much the men are looked down upon because of these features. I feel the natural hair movement gave darker skin women with tightly coiled hair a voice.. to say to the world ESPECIALLY the black world " HEY WE ARE HERE, WE ARE BEAUTIFUL AND HEAR US ROAR. Lighter skin looser coiled black women are embraced more opening to the viewing public and the black community. I guess their look is looked upon as exotic (being natural). When the question was posed all over blogs about the Carols Daughter new campaign, I exercised my rights to say I was disappointed. It wasn't until later I read she was trying to target another audience "mix chicks" to get versatility. I got it, but in the past I truly do not remember Lisa advertising dark skinned tightly coiled women along with her products,.She has in my opinion always went for the looks like her current spoke models. I get sick of women of color deflecting or going against the grain to sound politically correct and say 'it doesn't matter'. If you are a dark skin women with tighter coils it does matter, it matters with young girls growing up now.. we are trying to teach them to love and respect themselves and never believe themselves to be anything less. With advertisements like this from BLACK OWNED companies what is that really showing young black girls? We are more conscious now a days in trying to teach our young girls to love their natural hair and everything GOD has Blessed them with. It comes back to the house and field negro again and truly I do not want the Natural Hair movement to go in that direction. We are make strides like I never thought could be reached. Mainstream TV are showing in 1 hour of tv commercials at least 1-2 naturals and that is terrific... now if we could get Black businesses to get on the same accord that would be wonderful. If we are truthful and discuss appropriately and kindly ...dialogue can be transferred to businesses and the like.
Disclaimer: I do not dislike my lighter skin sisters, I know we all have our own battles we have to strive to better.. I am speaking for me and any other darker skin sister that may want to bring light to the Natural Hair Community *Peace Nubia*
